Stuffed hangings in India were inspired by Western rag dolls introduced during the British Raj, then adapted with vibrant colours and beads. Made in workshops across Kolkata’s slums and nearby villages by the producer group Sasha, artisans learn skills in drawing, cutting, stitching, and stuffing. This empowers them economically and socially, helping them gain confidence to challenge discrimination. Materials are chosen to minimise environmental impact, with production mainly by hand and minimal machinery.
